Inaugural Gala 2002
Our first annual Gala at Cipriani on December 2, 2002 was an enormous success, owed in large part to the support and dedication of more than 50 volunteers from 100 Women in Hedge Funds.

Hoping for 500 guests and ending up with 650, we had to turn folks away! The evening included an elegant cocktail hour and sit down dinner, a silent and live auction, and awards given to Senator Hillary Clinton for her work on women's health care issues, and to Sandra Manzke for her leadership in the industry. Proceeds from table sales and auction items resulted in almost $900,000 for breast cancer research at the NYU Cancer Institute.

Auction items included a Fisher's Island Weekend package, a week at a Harbour Island, Bahamas vacation home, an exclusive golf package featuring four country clubs, six days of sailing in the BVI, and a 2.5% equity stake in a thoroughbred racehorse. We also had great in-kind sponsors who donated time or items such as auctioneer services, flower arrangements, ad design, printing, photography, advertising space, and musicians for cocktail hour.
In recognition of our donation, NYU Cancer Institute is naming the breast cancer procedure suite after 100 Women in Hedge Funds. The suite will be located in the Breast Cancer Care Center, a dedicated facility within the new 16-floor Clinical Center of the NYU Cancer Institute that is being built on East 34th Street, just a few blocks from the main NYU campus. It is scheduled to open in 2004.

Stereotactic Biopsy Machine
The suite bearing our name will consist of an examination and procedure room, and a stereotactic needle biopsy room. A portion of the Gala proceeds will pay for a stereotactic biopsy machine. In addition to enabling doctors to make an accurate diagnosis for a woman with suspected breast cancer, tissue samples removed during procedures performed this suite will be analyzed for their molecular profiles, helping doctors predict each cancer's behavior and choose the most appropriate therapy.
