100 Women in Hedge Funds to honor Karen Cook, former Chief Investment Officer of Steinhardt Management Company, with its 2013 U.S. Industry Leadership Award at New York Gala

June 17, 2013

New York, NY – June 17, 2013 – 100 Women in Hedge Funds (100WHF), a leading non-profit organization for professionals in the Alternatives industry, today announced that it will honor Karen Cook, former Chief Investment Officer of Steinhardt Management Company, Inc., with the 100WHF U.S. Industry Leadership Award at its New York Gala, to be held on November 13, 2013. Everett Cook, Karen's husband and Co-Founder, Pouschine Cook Capital Management, LLC, will join Karen at the Gala and accept the award on her behalf.

Each year, 100WHF honors a woman whose professional talent, business ethic, and passion for investing help define and advance the Alternatives industry's standards of excellence. Past awardees include Dr. Marna Whittington, Allianz Global Investors Capital; Afsaneh Beschloss, Rock Creek Group; Dorothy Collins Weaver, Collins Capital; Kathryn A. Hall, Hall Capital Partners; Sonia Gardner, Avenue Capital; Jane Mendillo, Harvard Management Company and Anne Dinning, The D. E. Shaw group.

Karen retired as Chief Investment Officer of Steinhardt Management Company, Inc in 2008, marking the end of a career that spanned over 30 years and saw the earliest days of women’s leadership in the Alternatives industry. She joined Steinhardt Partners, L.P. in 1995 as General Partner and Director of Client Services and in 1996 transitioned to overseeing outside hedge funds and managed accounts. In addition to her responsibilities at Steinhardt, she simultaneously served as Managing General Partner of Nepeta Partners, LP, a top-performing fund-of-funds invested in hedge funds. Prior to her tenure at Steinhardt, Karen was a Vice President and senior proprietary trader in the Equities Division at Goldman Sachs & Co from 1975 until 1988, where she was the first woman hired in that division and the third female finance professional in the firm overall. She also served on the Supervisory Board of Fifth Avenue Alternative Investments, LLC (Bessemer Trust).

Karen has been actively involved in several charitable organizations as well, including the International Rescue Committee (Board of Overseers, Investment Committee Co-Chair), The LiveStrong Foundation (former Board Member, Investment Committee Co-Chair), and The Initiative to Educate Afghan Women (former Board Member). She is also a former Board Member and Investment Committee Co-chair of Wheaton College in Massachusetts, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree, magna cum laude, in 1974. Karen subsequently earned her MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business in 1979.

Karen’s retirement shortly followed her diagnosis of PSP (progressive supranuclear palsy), a rare neurodegenerative disease, in 2008.  In solidarity with his wife, Karen’s husband Everett, who will provide remarks at 100WHF’s New York Gala on Karen’s behalf, joined the board of directors of CurePSP, a foundation dedicated to PSP care, education and research.

Commenting on the selection, Lauren Malafronte, 100WHF Board of Directors Executive Committee Member and Managing Director, Global Prime Finance at Scotiabank, said, "Karen Cook undoubtedly deserves 100WHF’s and the Alternatives industry’s acknowledgement as a pioneer on the trading desk, and a consummate professional whose skill, knowledge and insight propelled her to impressive achievements at top-tier Wall Street firms. Her dedication to sharing her investment management acumen in order to advise institutions promoting women's education echoes 100WHF’s very mission and is a reminder to us all of our obligation to serve the nonprofit sector. 100 Women in Hedge Funds is thrilled to salute Karen Cook for her leadership in the marketplace and around the globe.”

Net proceeds from the 2013 New York Gala and other U.S. fundraising events will support Best Buddies.
